Enjoying Outdoors

Just a quick note to let you know how much I enjoy Brad Harvey's articles in the Enquirer-Herald. I've been a subscriber for many years and admit I didn't read it too much before. Now I make sure to read some of the articles but absolutely read his every time. I'm still learning about the outdoors and I find his articles very informative and helpful.

I particularly liked the articles on patterning a shotgun, Bobby Abernathy's turkey and the one last week on rabies. I know the parents of the Davis boy that makes the turkey chokes. Bobby has done some mounting for me and I shot what I thought was a rabid fox about 15 years ago near the intersection of Woods and Lincoln Road in Duane Alsobrooks' pasture. Small world.

I'm pushing 60 real hard and have been camping, hiking, fishing and hunting since I was about 7, and there is still a lot to learn. Brad's articles have been very helpful.

As a member of the Board of Trustees of the College of Charleston, I have had many opportunities to learn about the exceptional commitment of the faculty, staff and students to community partnerships.

I have seen tremendous growth in enrollment and in industry support and private gifts for programs at the School of Business and Economics, particularly in Hospitality and Tourism Management, the Economic Partnership and Real Estate programs, and the Global Trade Initiative. The interest and demand for these programs are truly remarkable.

I have seen great enthusiasm and energy from faculty and staff at the Center for Partnerships to Improve Education, who work with teachers and students from "at-risk" schools. We are all very proud of the positive outcomes we have realized in partnership with these schools.

State funding for these important programs, which serve hundreds of college students and respond to the needs of businesses and educators across South Carolina, was in serious jeopardy this legislative session. As a trustee of the College, I wish to extend my utmost thanks to our senators and representatives for recognizing the value of these programs by reinstating their state appropriations. This will allow the College to continue providing academic and partnership opportunities that do not exist elsewhere in the region. We hope you will stop by when you are in our area to see these programs in action so that we may thank you in person.

As a constituent, I wish to thank our legislators for their continued support for South Carolina colleges and universities and the special programs they provide for our communities. Your consideration and your votes for higher education are greatly appreciated.
